John-Reed > This last Sunday, a whole bunch (maybe 80,000?) people gathered in San Francisco early in the AM to run and/or walk in maybe the world's biggest footrace, the annual "Bay to Breakers" event. I've been doing it for around 25 years now, when I could. Here are some shots I took with my Fluzi camera along the way. The first few shots were taken in the milling mob awaiting the starting gun at Spear and Howard Streets. The sign promises severe penalties for disobedience, but are those flying tortillas covered in the New Testament?
John-Reed > Tortillas and legs. Before the race, there are always a WHOLE bunch of tortillas and beach balls in the air over the impatient runners.
John-Reed > The man on the right asked me if I was with the Press. I said no, but asked if I could take their picture. He was wheelchair-bound, but his wife was going to run the race.
John-Reed > BANG! At 8:00 AM the race starts. Here's the START line, which I crossed at about 8:02 AM; people would be crossing it for another hour! I'm not fast, I just got there early!
John-Reed > Early runners don't get to see much in the way of Centipedes, but here's one, a big tube of Crest toothpaste!
John-Reed > Here we all are, running down Howard Street. Having started early enough, nary a walker in sight.
John-Reed > Ahead is the dreaded "Hayes Street Hill," the top of which is about 2.5 miles into the race.
John-Reed > I tried to take a shot from the top of the Hill; it's always amazing to me to see the "river" of people, a mass of humanity that stretches for 7.5 miles across the whole City of San Francisco.
John-Reed > Not long after topping the Hill, you run into Golden Gate Park; I stopped and took a shot of the Conservatory of Flowers there. (My younger daughter got married here)
